Day 4 – Friday 13th March

1.30 JCB Triumph Hurdle (Grade 1 Juvenile Hurdle )

This is a tough race for novice hurdlers and is ran at break neck speed over 2 miles 1 furlong. It’s not an easy race to find the winner but eight of the ten winners could be found in top four in the betting.Favorites have a poor record in race and only 1 managed to win in last 13 years.16 of the last 20 Triumph Hurdle winners have won on their last start prior to the Triumph Hurdle. At the start of season I was told Hargam was the No 1 hope for the Henderson horse hence why he is on my list of horses to follow. He was beaten by a very good horse in Golden Doyen on his debut at Cheltenham but showed a good attitude in defeat and ground he hated. On his next start in the Trial race at the same track in December he won quite easily under McCoy beating a highly regarded horse in Karezak from the King stable. He followed this win at Musselburgh against donkeys in the Scottish Triumph Hurdle Trial but he has been improving all season and could be a major player in the race.He will relish faster ground and will give the fave Peace and Co a race.I didn’t take any AP bets on him at this time though and could regret this if ever he wins.

Next up is Kalkir who I was told was Mullins No 1 Triumph Hurdle prospect a while ago and some of us did snap the 33-1 ante post.He made mince meat of the opposition on his debut at Fairyhouse. He then encountered heavy ground at Leopardstown and he really hated it that day as he wasn’t settling properly in the race.We then learnt that he did miss some work at home few days before that race.He then raced at Leopardstown in the Spring Juvenile Hurdle but found his stablemate Petite Parisienne too good.I think he will be more effective on good ground and we will be happy with a place at least.Peace and Co sets the standard on what we have seen so far.He made all on his debut at Doncaster and looked visually impressive. He then followed up at Cheltenham by beating Karezak by 3 lengths. He is a bit short in the betting and he will need to settle better in his race next week.

Top Notch is another I was told before he even raced and we did snap up the 33-1 on him .He is still unbeaten so far in 3 starts but has been racing in small fields against donkeys. The only good horse he beat was Golden Doyen in Sodexho Juvenile Hurdle. He travels well in his race ,stays all day and is a grinder. The Adonis Juvenile Hurdle (won by Beltor ) and the Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown( won by Petite Parisienne) have provided the Triumph Hurdle winner between them on nine occasions in the last 15.I was at Kempton the day Beltor routed a good field and won going away. That day he travelled powerfully and never looked in danger. This horse has a serious engine but I still think he will be better on a track like Aintree so I will back him over there if he runs.Petite Parisienne being a filly comes into the equation as she will be getting the 7lbs mare allowance. She should have won at Punchestown but was given an awful ride by Cooper. But she then justified the fath of his trainer who sent her straight to the Grade 1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle race and she justified that faith by winning and staying on strongly towards the end of the race.he should improve for that run and will also enjoy the ground.I will give a small each way chance to Devilment at 25-1 too.

Selections – Kalkir 33-1 & Top Notch 33-1 ( ante post) , Hargam 13-2

Forecast/ Tricast

2.05 Vincent O’Brien County Handicap Hurdle

This is a race normally targeted by the Irish and they have won 6 times in the last 8 years. It’s another fascinating puzzle to solve and last year we won the race with Lac Fontana at 16-1.Paul Nichols and Willie Mullins have won five of the last ten renewals.Last year Lac Fontana came with a devastating turn of foot to beat Arctic Fire in the closing stages. The Boylesports Hurdle at Leopardstown is the best guide to this race as it has produced five of the last 7 Irish trained winners in this race. The Betfair Hurdle at Newbury is the best British Guide as it has featured the winner four times in the last 11 occasions. Will decide nearer race which ones I will back

Selections- Princely Conn 16-1  & Cheltenian 18-1

2.40 Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle

Stamina is a key issue in this gruelling 3 mile novice chase.Experience is vital in this race and although the race is reserved for novices four of the last nine winners were 2nd season hurdlers  and all nine had run over timber at least 3 times.Very Wood was the winner at 33-1 last year for Gigginstown. They do like to target this race and have won it twice in the last 6 years. The last 8 winners in the last ten years have all been in the top 5 in the betting.Black Hercules has won his 2 starts so far this season but didn’t beat too much. Both races were on heavy ground and he will encounter different conditions next week.He has been kept fresh for the race since December. He also has solid course form having run 4th in the Champion Bumper last year.No More Heroes is a very good horse too and he beat the well regarded Shaneshill (will run in Supreme on Tuesday ) back in December. He then went to Leopardstown and disappointed. He was beaten by Outlander (runs in Neptune on Wed) and finished 5th that day.He could get his ground on Friday though but he will need to improve a lot to have a chance of winning.

Blaklion is a horse I have always admire since his  debut. This horse has a huge heart and will always give you a run for your money. He is on my list to follow and has rewarded us with some fantastic performances this season. He has been seen 6 times so far and and won 3 times.Parlour Games(runs in Neptune on Wed)  beat him twice and he was narrowly beaten by Carraci Apache at Doncaster by a short head.He also has solid course form and is a real battler. At 14-1 he represents decent value in the and I have snapped some of it NRNB.Value at Risk was a high class bumper in Ireland before being bought by Dan Skeleton. He was impressive on his debut at Newbury when he won by 25 lengths .He was then beaten  narrowly on his subsequent start by Ordo Ab Chao at Cheltenham. He was playing up before the race that day but ran on strongly at the end .The step up in trip will help but heard from a good source close to Skeleton yard that this year may have come too quick for him as he is still learning the game but he will be better for the festival in 2016.Vyta du Roc could be a player if they decide to run him in this race.Little bet also on Arbre de Vie at 25-1 NRNB

Selection – Blaklion 14-1  ,Arbre de Vie 25-1 (NRNB)

3.20 Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup

This is one of the highlights of the festival and feature race on the last day. It’s one of those races that owners, trainers and jockeys want to win once in their lifetime. Most of the winners in this race have previously ran at the festival before .Nine of the last ten winners were running in the Gold Cup for the first time. The King Georges at Kempton (Won by Silviniaco Conti ) or the Lexus Chase(won by Road To Riches) have been the guide for this race in the last 15 years.Fourteen winners have come from those 2 races.Ireland’s leading guide,The Lexus have provided five of the last nine winners.12 out of the last 14 winners of the Gold Cup were rated 166 or above.Silviniaco Conti didn’t have much luck in the race.He unseated in 2013 and then ran a bizarre race last year when he looked the likeliest winner once he took over at the 3rd last but managed to throw race away in final furlongs. He disappointed in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby but won the Betfair Chase and the King Georges on his next 2 starts. On both occasions the cheek pieces were applied and they had the desired effect as he destroyed the field both times. The stable is really firing as well and he has a solid chance of winning. The only slight disadvantage is that his Cheltenham record is not that great and I ’think’ he is a better horse on flat tracks.I still think he is the class horse in race.

Lord Windermere was the winner of this race last year and a surprise one for many people. He has solid course form having already won twice and represents decent value knowing he has been prepared for this race.Road To Riches is another one that has progressed into a really good horse this year.He won The Galway Plate last year. He made his seasonal debut at Gowran Park in the PWC Champion Chase but was beaten a short head by Sizing Europe. He then went to Down Royal and beat a very good horse in Rocky Creek by 11 lengths. The latter did give the form a boost few weeks ago by winning at Kempton in the BetBright Chase.Road to Riche went to Leopardstown and won the Lexus Chase beating a very good field that day that consisted of Carlingford Lough ( boosted the form next time out by winning the Hennessy Gold Cup  beating On His Own and Lord Windermere) ,On His Own,Lord Windermere,Boston Bob etc. This is rock solid form in my opinion.I know he has been targeted at this race since winning the Galway plate and he goes there with avery good chance. The slight disadvantage is he has never ran at Cheltenham but he can do a Syncronised (won race in 2012).Many Clouds has been a revelation this season winning all his 3 starts. He won the Hennessy Gold Cup Chase at Newbury beating some highly regarded horses like Smad Place,Djakadam(went on to win the Thyestes on his next start)  and Unioniste (won at Sandown in his next start) in the process. He then went on to win at Cheltenham onhis last start beating Smad Place once again and Dynaste. He was very fluent once again and travelled powerfully throughout his race.At 8-1/9-1 he represents decent value in the race .The only worry for him will be if the ground dries out.I will give each way chances to Coneygree if he lines up here .Bobs Worth isn’t the same horse and I can’t see him troubling the market leaders.Djakadam could be the dark horse in the race and there was somepositive vibes coming from the Mullins yard regarding his work at home recently.

Selections –  Silviniaco Conti 9-2 & Road to Riches 9-1

Combination Forecast/ Tricast

4.00 St James Place Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup

This is a race reserved for amateur riders and is ran over the distance of 3 miles 2 furlongs. The Irish have a great record in the race and will be represented by On The Fringe and Salsify. The latter will try to win the race for the 3rd time,a feat that has never been realised. We have to look for a horse below 11 as only 2 aged 11 and above have won the race in the last 24 years. We also know that point –to- pointers who are yet to run under Rules can win the race.20 of the last 21 winners have already won a race before.Paint The Clouds have been laid out for the race and has been very impressive this season. Will wait nearer race to have a bet in the race.

Selections –Paint The Clouds 5-1 ,Current Event 11-1 saver

4.40 Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle

This is the handicap hurdle that is run over the distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs. There have only been 6 renewals of the race and we have been lucky enough to win 3 of those in the last 4 years namely with Sir Des Champs,Attaglance and last year with Don Poli. The latter’s victory last season meant back to back successes for the third top weight in the race.David Pipe love entering a lot of his horses but so far they have been disappointing.Too many horses in the betting so far and many with multiple entries which means  hard to know right now.But have my eyes on Le Mercurey 10-1 ,Jolly’s Cracked It 16-1,Un Atout 20-1,Arbre de Vie 16-1,Dell Arca 25-1

Selections –  Le Mercurey 10-1 & Jolly’s Cracked It  20-1

5.15 Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Chase

This is the final race that bring down the curtain on the 4 days of the spectacular Festival.By this time we could either be drunk while trying to fill the wheelbarrows or we could be waiting for a big priced winner to save the day or festival as it’s the #Luckylast J .Bookies love this race as they have won 4 of the 5 runnings at big odds of 16-1 ,20-1,40-1 and 16-1. 13 out of the last 33 have been won by novices and we should look at those carrying a low weight. The Irish do very well in the race with 6 wins and four 2nds in the last 15 years.Seven out of the last 8 British trained horses had won before at Cheltenham.Nicky Henderson also does well in ‘dad’s race’ as he targets this race every year and enters a lot of horses.Pay attention specially to those owned by J P Mcmanus as he has a great record in race too.Just heard that the race will be named after AP McCoy and that will be the final time that he will be riding for the festival and I expect a big gamble on the Mcmanus horse Ned Buntline, who we backed last year in same race and got us some place money in 2nd.

Selections – Ned Buntline 8-1 ,saver Grumeti 25-1

Day 3 – Thursday 12th March

1.30 JLT Novices Chase

The JLT was formerly known as the Jewson and you need plenty of stamina in this race. There are 17 fences to be jumped over the 2miles 4 f distance. We need to look for an Irish trained horse who has ran well at last year’s festival and has Grade 1 Novice Chase form.Lets start with Vautour. He was another horse last year that we battered Ante post for the Supreme and he rewarded us with a scintillating round of jumping. He is a worthy favourite for this race having won 2 out of 3 races this season.Something was wrong with the horse over Xmas when he hit a fence and then was never able to get back in the race. But we saw the real Vautour in his next race with Ruby back on board. The vibes from the Mullins camp are positive and he has been working really well. The 5-1 to win and 3-1 to win any race at Festival could be great value soon.Apache Stronghold has been really good this season and one we followed too.He was 2nd to Valseur Lido in the Drinmore but he did reverse that form at Leopardstown .He will be better on faster ground and he will get the strong pace tht he adores.Serious each way chance for those who missed the value with Vautour.

Still don’t know where Valseur Lido will be running. It will be either this race or the RSA all depending on where Don Poli runs.He is a top class horse who will be a plyer in whatever race he runs.Ptit Zig is another horse that has been  revelation this season. He did fall against more experienced rivals at Ascot in his last race but he had won his 4 previous races quite easily. The only thing I am worried about Ptit Zig is he can make the odd mistakes and this could be unforgiving at Cheltenham. We have seen what happened with Rock On Ruby last year when he clattered an early fence and it was game over.At bigger odds Splash of Ginge at 25-1 could represent some decent value as he will relish a return to faster ground. But I can’t see past Vautour. If he jumps like we know he can he will demolish this field with Ruby doing the steering. The main danger could be Apache Stronghold

Selection – Vautour 5-1 (antepost ) and 3-1/6-1 to win any race at the festival

2.05 Pertemps Networks Final

This is another tough race at the festival to solve for us punters due to its competitive nature and big field.Despite the higher standard of horses the Pertemps is now attracting the horses towards the top of handicap continue to struggle.Favorite backers were only rewarded once in the last 11 years and that was last year when Fingal Bay won off top weight.10 out of the last 11 winners have been double figure odds.We have to look for a horse aged between eight and ten as they have won seven of the last 9 runnings. The best guide to this race must be the Fixed Brush Handicap Hurdle with three of the last six winners finishing in the first five.Since am not too sure about official entries I haven’t had a bet in race but rumours saying Edeymi has been laid out for this race and he is currently priced at 12-1 .

 Selection – Edeymi 8-1 & Call The Cops 11-1

2.40 Ryanair Chase

The Ryanair is run over 2 miles 4 furlongs and it has always been a very competitive race.Last year Dynaste won for us but sadly he isn’t in the line up this time being injured. At the time of writing Cue Card has just been confirmed as a Non Runner in race and he was one of the contenders to the crown. The King George at Kempton can be seen roughly as a guide to this race as Dynaste became the 6th winner in the last 7 years to have been beaten in the King Georges before. The Paddy Power Gold Cup and the Betfair Ascot Chase have provided four winners each in recent yearsand are useful guides. The Irish have a really poor record in race with no winners from 28 since 2005.Don Cossack will want to buckle that trend next week. You need to find a horse with stamina in abundance and also that travels /jumps fluenly.Don Cossack has been awesome this season and his task has been made easier with the defection of Cue Card.He has won 4 out of 4 this season including the John Durkan at Punchestown and has been jumping brilliantly in all those races. He will relish the faster ground next week and the only small negative will be the big field as he has always been racing in small fields in Ireland. He looks rock solid at the top of the market and it will take a good one to lower his colours.Balder Succes has been frustrating this season before he rediscovered his love for the game recently by winning at Kempton and then the Grade 1 at Ascot (Ma Filleule was 2nd behind ).He has been transformed by the step up in distance and a repeat of his Ascot performance will give him strong claims to land the prize.

Ma Filleule(one of our horses to follow this season) will be a serious contender in the race too as she will get the 7lbs mares allowance .She demolished the the field last year in the Topham Chase and had previously finished 2nd to Holywell at the festival. She was beaten last December but hated the ground that day.She is a spring horse and is an each way bet to nothing in race.Taquin Du Seuil has been very disappointing this season and has been labouring in most of his race.He won at the festival last year but he will need to be at his very best to trouble the main protagonists.I will give a small chance to Johns Spirit who has solid course form at Cheltenham. He should have won back to back Paddy Power Gold Cup but was narrowly denied by Caid du Berlais under a terrific ride from Sam Twiston Davies. He could run a big race at decent odds.I have this race between Don Cossack and Ma Filleule.I am going to follow my brains and go with Ma Filleule

Selection – Ma Filleule 5-1

 3.20 Ladbrokes World Hurdle

It is one of the leading long distance hurdle event at the festival. It is the highlight of Day 3 and we have seen the likes of Big Bucks dominating this race for years recently.More of That ,the defending champion is sadly not here this time to defend this crown.I am also convinced that Willie Mullins won’t be running Annie Power here and will send her to Mares Hurdle,a race that she has been aimed all season. The Long Walk Hurdle had been a strong guide recently and has featured more World Hurdle winners than any other race in the last 20 years. The Cleeve Hurdle is also one that has delivered 4 winners and 3 runner ups in last 8 years. The Irish have a poor record in race since 1995 and only had one winner in last 20 years in Solwhit. The race is wide open this year Lets start with Saphir du Rheu, one of the horses I put forward in my ones to follow this season. He was sent chasing but was very disappointing. He wasn’t a natural over fences and it was right decision to send him back hurdling. He won the Cleeve Hurdle in great style on his return over hurdles. He was getting 4lbs from Reve de Sivola that day but I was really pleased by what I saw that day.The real Saphir du Rheu was back and he was determined and battled on gamely till the line going away. This is the sign of a very good horse and made me remember his win over Whisper in the Welsh Champion Hurdle. His sectional times were very good and he is a good stayer. Also he still has improvement in him and should be ready on the big day.

Zarkandar has ran well this season and surprised me in the process. He won a Grade 1 at Auteuil last year and he was a close 2nd in the Long Walk Hurdle when he was caught close home.I just don’t think he is a top class horse and when he was running against Hurricane Fly I used to call him Zarkandar the slow boat .Whisper was one of our most profitable horses last season when he won for us at a huge price at Cheltenham in the Coral Cup and following up in style at Aintree. In fact I was following my form lines through Saphir du Rheu .He was also sent chasing but never warmed to the task at Exeter.I think he has been laid for this race and must have solid each way claims in race. The ground will suit and the yard are firing big time just at the right time. The 14-1 available right now could be big next week.Rock On Ruby is another one that has performed credibly well since he reverted back over the small obstacles.I just think the step up in distance might stretch him a bit but he is one to consider for place claims as he has rock solid course form.I will also give a small mention to Un Temps Pour Tout ,another horse on my list to follow. He has been prepared for this race and ran well behind Saphir du Rheu last time out.He will improve a lot for that run and could be the dark horse in race.

Selections – Saphir du Rheu 11-2  ,Whisper 14-1  saver

Forecast/Tricast – Saphir du Rheu/Whisper/Un Temps Pour Tout

4.00 Browne Advisory & Merribelle Stable Plate (formerly known as Byrne Plate)

This is another tricky handicap race at the festival and one that hasn’t been too kind for punters in recent years.Only 1 favorite has won in the last 14 years and winners in the past 6 years have been 12-1,50-1,18-1,66-1,33-1.Its a race that David Pipe likes to target and he has won 3 times in the last 5 years.Venitia Williams is another trainer than has won the race 3 times in the last 8 years .It’s worth paying attention to what they run in race even if they are double figure odds. Also French bred horses have a nice record in race having won in 7 times.

Selections –Attaglance 12-1 & Caid Du Berlais 14-1

 4.40 Fulke Walwyn KimMuir Challenge

This race is reserved for amateur riders and is run over 3 miles 1 furlong.Donald McCain likes to target this race as five of his last eight runners have finished in the top five.Six of the last ten winners have contested a handicap chase at Cheltenham in the season. So far we don’t know yet which horses will be running in that race as many have multiple entries.Benbane Head 25-1 ,Soll 16-1 ,Garrahalish 25-1,Lamb Or Cod 33-1 will be some of the horses I will be keeping a close eye in race.No bet yet

Selections – The Package 16-1 & Garrahalish 33-1
